Reading the early signs of membrane fouling

Normalised permeate flow tells you more than any alarm. How to spot fouling weeks before it costs you a cleaning cycle.

Why normalisation matters

Raw flow and pressure readings move with temperature and feed salinity, so a falling number may mean nothing at all. Normalising permeate flow and salt passage removes those effects. What is left is the trend that matters: the condition of the membrane itself.

Three patterns to watch

A gradual decline in normalised flow across all stages points to organic or colloidal fouling. A rise in differential pressure on the first stage alone usually means particulate fouling in the lead elements. A rise in salt passage concentrated in the last stage is the classic sign of scaling.

From trend to action

Our operations teams set alert thresholds at a 7% change from baseline, well before the 10–15% that most cleaning guidelines use. That buys the time to adjust pretreatment or antiscalant dosing. Often the cleaning cycle can be avoided altogether.
